My name is Balthazar and I am the last of the line of the Magi. Once my kind stood as the keepers of the secret arts, the defenders of the nine realms and the stewards of power. Now I am an old scholar who lives alone, the last of an old breed. It is because of this I choose to record that which I believe will be the last writings of the Magi. The following is my transcriptions on the accounts of history, on the treatises of magic, and on the events of the final days of my life in a time that I fear will be recorded in future histories as the time of Trial.
